Apple released it’s much anticipated iPhone 6 and 6 Plus a few weeks ago. The launch was incredible and set a new record for pre-orders. Sales of the phones topped 10 million sold during the phone’s launch weekend alone. Both models were extremely popular, but the iPhone 6 Plus sold out not long after pre-orders began and the shipping dates now aren’t expected for 3 to 4 weeks due to such high demand. Successful? I’d say so. Since the launch… things have been a little rocky for Apple’s newest iPhone. From #bendgate to iOS8 issues, this hasn’t actually been a smooth launch.

Shortly after the iPhone 6 Plus was released on September 19, reports of the device bending when placed in a pocket began to surface. A popular “YouTuber” then created a video showing him bending his own iPhone 6 Plus in his hands. Since then, the video has gone viral and people started to panic. Others came forward with reports of bent phones. From my perspective, the severity of this issue based on normal everyday wear and tear to a phone seems non-existent. It’s been shown (through a consumer report study that the problem isn’t as common or simple to achieve as people are assuming.

According to MacRumors:

“Consumer reports went on to test the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus after reports of bending, and found that the two devices are not quite as bendable as the media has suggested. In a three-point flexural test, the iPhone 6 Plus withstood 90 pounds of force before bending, while the iPhone 6 withstood 70 pounds of force, which is more force than the two devices are likely to be subjected to during daily use.

According to Consumer Reports, though the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are not indestructible, they ‘should stand up to typical use.’”

Apple has since released a statement stating that with normal use the bending of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus is extremely rare. In fact, they claimed to have only 9 reports of bent phones out of over 10 million sold. I’m with Apple on this one. Obviously thin metal has a breaking or bending point. But to the man who sat on his phone for 18 hours and then complained that it started bending – really? Would you sit on your tablet for 18 hours, or any other expensive electronic for that matter, and expect it not to be affected?

Then there was the iOS8 update that rendered some iPhone’s useless.ABC News Tech Reported:

“’iOS 8.0.2 is now available for users, it fixes an issue that affected iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users who downloaded iOS 8.0.1, and includes improvements and bug fixes originally in iOS 8.0.1,’ Apple said in a statement. ‘We apologize for inconveniencing the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users who were impacted by the bug in iOS 8.0.1.’

The company said 40,000 iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus devices were affected when users downloaded iOS 8.0.1. The update was only available for a brief period of time Wednesday before Apple rolled back the operating system update because of the reported problems.”

Here’s what I think about the whole thing. Apple still ends up on top. Yes, they’ve had a few bumps and scandals in this otherwise record-breaking launch. The reason I see this as such a non-issue is that Apple is on top of it. They have such a high standard and history with a successful product that I don’t think for a second they would let these issues slip by without addressing them. They sold over 10 million phones in one weekend. These guys aren’t going to just let the phones fail. They’re aiming even higher in coming years and they won’t lower their standards to get there.

Thoughts? Anyone out there with a new iPhone that can speak from experience? Disagree with me? Leave a comment below!
